THE BLUFFTON HERITAGE DISCOVERY TOUR  10:00 AM - 4:00 PM
Kick off the Bluffton Arts & Seafood Festival with Celebrate Bluffton’s inaugural tour of historic properties. This self-paced tour is filled with stories of the remarkable people and events that have contributed to the charm and character of our Lowcountry town.

Whether your Bluffton roots are just taking hold or stretch back generations, spend a few minutes with one of the guides at each location and you’ll have a new appreciation of our heritage.
Our tour includes the following properties:
• Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church- Members of the current congregation will share the history of the church, including its antebellum origin and its purchase by freed slaves, and how new programs for its members and the community  continue to celebrate the legacy of its founders.
• Palmetto Bluff- In the early 20th century, this magnificent landscape attracted Richard T. Wilson, a wealthy NY banker, who built a mansion in what is now Wilson Village.  Come and see some of the artifacts from excavations of the mansion and hear how the Wilson family  brought society and sometimes drama to Beaufort County.
• St. Luke’s Church and Cemetery- Built in 1824 to serve as the church of St. Luke’s Parish, this building retains many fascinating and original architectural features.  Find out how the parish was established,  what happened to the original church and who is buried in the surrounding cemetery.
• Buck Island/Bluffton Cemetery- You may find that some of the stories of the early Bluffton residents and their descendants buried here are haunting, whether or not you believe in ghosts.
• The Garvin House- Constructed c. 1870 by freed slave Cyrus Garvin, this property provides a glimpse into Bluffton’s African American society during Reconstruction. Discover what historians have learned by looking at the structure and sifting through old documents.
After the tour, come back to the Campbell Chapel A.M.E. Church where you can enjoy the sweet sounds of voices in harmony. The concert begins at 4:30 PM and you’re also invited to stay for dinner! An authentic Lowcountry Gullah supper will follow at 5:30 PM and will include storytelling and more music.
Tickets for the tour and the dinner will be available on or around September 1.
Come and be captivated by our history!
